Why Three Stars? The Story Behind Samsung’s Name

Today, Samsung is synonymous with innovation, cutting-edge technology, and a global brand present all over the world. But have you ever wondered why this name was chosen and what it really means? Behind Samsung lies a story rich in symbolism, business vision, and deep cultural roots.

The name “Samsung” consists of two Korean words: “Sam,” meaning “three,” and “Sung,” which translates to “star.” Literally, it means “Three Stars,” and this was no random choice. In Korean culture, the number three represents greatness and longevity. Additionally, traditional philosophy speaks of the “three fundamentals” (heaven, earth, and humanity) and the “three virtues” (wisdom, benevolence, and courage), further reinforcing the significance of the name. The three stars symbolize brilliance and eternity.

Lee Byung-chul, Samsung’s founder, chose this name for his company, which originally focused on exporting basic goods like dried fish and fruits in Daegu, South Korea. Although it started modestly, some historians believe the name already reflected his ambition to influence three key spheres: industry, society, and the world.

The 1930s were a difficult time for Korea, which was still under Japanese occupation (1910-1945). In this context, Korean entrepreneurs not only sought to survive but also to preserve their identity for the future. This is why Lee Byung-chul chose a name that honored his country’s traditional values while also representing the growth he envisioned for both his company and society.

This was not an isolated case. In Asia, many companies sought names with profound meanings. For example, Hyundai means “modernity,” and LG comes from “Lucky-Goldstar.”

After the Korean War (1950-1953), Samsung expanded into industries such as textiles, insurance, and electronics (Samsung Electronics was founded in 1969), but the name remained unchanged. This was because the values of the “three stars” could be applied to every new challenge the company took on. Even as it expanded internationally, the name proved to be both appealing and easy to remember, even if few outside Asia knew its true meaning.

Over the years, Samsung’s logo has evolved, but its name has remained the same, becoming one of the most recognizable in the world. What started as a simple yet symbolic name has transcended generations and borders. Today, the “Three Stars” continue to guide Samsung on its path to the future.
