Several people were injured — some seriously — on Friday when an SUV plowed into a group of pedestrians at a busy intersection in Stuttgart, southern Germany, local authorities reported.
The incident occurred around 5:50 p.m. on Charlottenstrasse, in the heart of the city, where multiple lanes of the B27 road converge near the Olgaeck light rail stop. According to police, a Mercedes-Benz G-Class vehicle turned into a crosswalk and struck several people.
Among the victims was a woman with a baby stroller, according to witnesses cited by Bild newspaper. Photos from the scene show the stroller badly damaged on the light rail tracks. The driver of the vehicle was temporarily detained by police.
Emergency services cordoned off the area, and urban rail and metro lines were temporarily suspended. Authorities are still investigating whether the crash was intentional or an accident.
