At least three people were killed on Tuesday in a shooting attack in the Swedish city of Uppsala, according to local police, who have not yet provided details about the possible circumstances of the incident.

In a statement, authorities said they had received calls from citizens reporting sounds similar to gunfire in the city center. Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene.

“Several individuals were found with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds,” the police said in their report.

According to public broadcaster SVT, several victims died and a suspect reportedly fled the scene on a scooter.

Police have cordoned off a large area and launched an investigation to clarify what happened.

This latest attack comes two months after the deadliest mass shooting in the country’s recent history, which occurred in February in the city of Örebro, when a 35-year-old unemployed man opened fire at an adult education center, killing ten people, including students and teachers.

Following that incident, the Swedish government announced plans to tighten gun control laws.
