Windows 10 is nearing its end, and Google is already encouraging us to choose its alternative

The end of Windows 10 is approaching quickly, and starting in October, users who do not update their operating system will face serious security issues. However, there are various alternatives to keep devices functional without compromising security or discarding them, and Google wants to position itself as one of them.

Despite the competition between Google and Microsoft, especially due to Chrome’s dominance in the browser market, both companies seek to benefit from each other. In this case, Google is trying to present itself as an alternative to Windows by offering ChromeOS as a viable option for devices that are no longer compatible with Microsoft’s system.

In a recent blog post, Google highlighted the many advantages of ChromeOS, particularly for organizations that have operated within the Microsoft ecosystem and now must decide whether to upgrade their hardware or switch to a different operating system. Google’s proposal is clear: ChromeOS allows users to continue using Microsoft 365 tools without needing to invest in new hardware.

Some of the key benefits Google highlights include:

  • Full compatibility with Microsoft 365 applications, available for download on ChromeOS.
  • Automatic login to Microsoft 365 apps thanks to ChromeOS configuration.
  • Integration of OneDrive into the system’s file manager.
  • The ability to store files directly in OneDrive to optimize local storage.
  • Centralized management for business environments, enabling administrators to configure all devices from a single point.

With these features, ChromeOS positions itself as an appealing alternative for those who rely on Microsoft 365 but do not want to invest in new hardware. However, for many businesses, acquiring more modern equipment could also lead to improved performance and quality.

On an individual level, any user can install ChromeOS on their device easily and for free through ChromeOS Flex, a lightweight version that Google has not heavily promoted but is available for download on its website.

In practice, many users use their computers only for basic office tasks, and in such cases, ChromeOS could be more than sufficient. With a lightweight workflow and without the demanding requirements of other operating systems, Google’s proposal could gain traction among those looking for a simple and efficient alternative.
