Instagram wants to make Reels longer and is set to compete with TikTok

The Meta app, Instagram, has a new version of Reels in the works. The social media platform owned by billionaire Mark Zuckerberg is planning to let users record up to 10-minute videos. This information came from leaker Alessandro Paluzzi, who shared screenshots of Reels pages, one to record for three minutes (the standard as of now) and another one for 10 minutes.

If Instagram were to expand the Reels feature from three minutes to ten, that would bring it close to the length of YouTube videos, and of course, TikTok, which already allows users to record content up to 10 minutes for free and 20 minutes if they purchase a separate tier.

As TikTok keeps gaining momentum, thanks to the engagement it offers users with its short-form videos, other apps have tried to jump into the trend updating their features that resemble the China-based company. These include editing tools, templates, and duration, which can be seen already on Reels and YouTube Shorts.

In spite of the leaks, Meta itself nor Instagram have announced they would extend Reels and have not addressed these plans through a public statement. The adjustment, however, would be pretty likely as TikTok seems to be capturing the bigger portion of Internet users thanks to its engaging tools, format, and content creators.

The 10-minute video increase would only work for more famous creators, though, as these types of platforms generally focus on creating short media content that can be quickly watched and reacted to as users do mindless scrolling on their devices.
