Earlier this month, two teachers from the state of Texas were dismissed after attending a drag queen show, in downtown Houston, Texas. This ocurred on July 13 when teacher Kristi Maris and her co-worker attended a drag show at Hamburger Mary’s and later posted a picture to Facebook with the caption “This was such a blast!”

After this, Maris got a call from her school, the First Baptist Academy, and was later fired. Both she and her co-worker had been teaching at that school for over 19 years but were surprisingly removed from their positions. About the situation, Maris stated that “I feel like we were treated like criminals,” according to ABC local station. She later said that the firing was unexpected and that they did not violate the school’s rules:

“They’re entertainers. I would’ve never thought in a million years that this would happen. Never. We were in disbelief. We still are. We were heartbroken. We had relationships with parents and the kids, and I didn’t even get to say goodbye to a lot of the kids.”

In contrast, the head pastor of the school said that both teachers violated the school’s operational policy manual, which was the reason both teachers were dismissed. They insisted that their employees must not have those behaviors stating that ” I will act in a godly and moral fashion at work, on Facebook and in my community,”

As a result of this situation, Hamburger Mary’s will host a benefiting show and GoFoundMe to raise money for the two women, considering they both were fired from their jobs. They will also “raise awareness that drag queens and the LGBTQIA+ community are not bad people.” Following the constant attacks traditional politicians have targeted the LGBTQIA+ groups in Texas.
