Athletic Club made a strong statement on Thursday by announcing the contract extension of Nico Williams until 2035, effectively putting an end to the persistent rumors linking him to FC Barcelona in recent weeks.

At just 21 years old, the winger has established himself as one of the most promising talents in Spanish football. His pace, dribbling skills, and ability to break through defenses had made him a top target for the Catalan club. However, Athletic has successfully secured their star with a long-term deal and a release clause that, although not officially disclosed, is expected to be significantly high.

Does this mean Barcelona is now out of options to strengthen their left wing?

For the time being, yes. With Williams off the market, Hansi Flick’s team will have to explore other alternatives, possibly turning to internal options like Lamine Yamal or seeking more financially viable signings, given the club’s current economic constraints.

Athletic’s official statement highlights Nico’s commitment to the club’s sporting project and his desire to continue growing at San Mamés. The decision has been warmly received by the Bilbao fans, who are celebrating the continued presence of one of their most important players.

The renewal also comes at a crucial time, just before the start of preseason and during Euro 2024, where Nico is also shining with the Spanish national team.
