The Houston Rockets are not slowing down this summer. After pulling off the blockbuster trade for Kevin Durant, the franchise has now secured the future of young forward Jabari Smith Jr. with a 5-year, $122 million extension. This move signals Houston’s clear ambition to become a dominant force in the Western Conference.
Smith Jr., selected 3rd overall in the 2022 NBA Draft, had a promising 2024–25 season, averaging 12.2 points and 7.0 rebounds over 57 games, despite recovering from a hand injury. The extension, fully guaranteed through the 2030–31 season, makes him a cornerstone of the team’s rebuild, thanks to his defensive versatility and reliable shooting.
Why sign this extension right now?
The answer is simple: the Rockets want stability in their young core during a major transition phase. Locking in Smith Jr. prevents him from being used in impulsive trades, as happened with Jalen Green, and ensures he can develop alongside stars like Durant. General manager Rafael Stone reportedly resisted offers involving Smith and refused to include him in the Durant deal.
The team’s overhaul also includes contract renewals for key players such as Fred VanVleet, Steven Adams, and Tari Eason, as well as the signing of experienced contributors like Aaron Holiday, Jeff Green, and Jae’Sean Tate. Meanwhile, adding Durant, a two-time Finals MVP and 15-time All-Star, instantly raises Houston’s ceiling as a title contender.
The mix of promising youth and veteran experience looks like the perfect formula. Smith Jr. brings energy, defense, and perimeter shooting, while Durant adds leadership and elite scoring. Together, they could elevate the Rockets’ performance in an increasingly competitive Western Conference.
