More than a dozen people were injured Friday evening in a knife attack at Hamburg’s central train station in Germany. Police reported Saturday that all victims are in stable condition.
The attacker, a 39-year-old German woman, was arrested at the scene without resistance. Authorities believe she acted alone. According to the Hamburger Abendblatt newspaper, two bystanders managed to overpower her and seize the knife before police arrived.
The attack occurred around 6 p.m. on the platform between tracks 13 and 14 of the station, a major transportation hub in Germany’s second-largest city. In total, 18 people, ranging in age from 19 to 85, were injured. Four individuals — three women aged 24, 52, and 85, and a 24-year-old man — were seriously wounded but remain in stable condition, according to authorities.
So far, investigators have found no evidence of a political motive. Police are examining whether the suspect may suffer from mental health issues. She is scheduled to appear before a judge on Saturday and may be admitted to a psychiatric facility.
It’s worth noting that carrying weapons, including knives, is prohibited both on public transportation and at stations such as the one where the attack took place.
