GTA 6 Breaks Records: More Expensive Than the World’s Tallest Building and a NASA Space Mission

The development of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) is pushing the boundaries of the digital entertainment industry. Scheduled for release in late 2025, Rockstar Games’ new title is not only shaping up to be the most ambitious video game ever made, but also the most expensive in history.

According to the gaming website GamingBible, the budget for GTA 6 may have reached $2 billion — an unprecedented figure in the gaming sector. Although neither Rockstar nor its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has officially confirmed the amount, if true, it would far surpass any previous project in the industry and be eight times larger than the budget for its predecessor, GTA V, released in 2013.

To grasp the scale of this investment, consider this: the Burj Khalifa — the tallest building in the world at 828 meters — was constructed for an estimated $1.5 billion. That means GTA 6 may have cost $500 million more than this architectural marvel in Dubai.

Another striking comparison comes from the space sector. NASA’s Europa Clipper mission, designed to explore one of Jupiter’s moons, carries a similar projected cost: $2 billion. Meanwhile, in the film industry, even large-scale productions like Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007), considered one of the most expensive movies ever made, had much more modest budgets, around $300 million.

The development of GTA 6 began over a decade ago, though serious production only picked up after the release of Red Dead Redemption II in 2018. That ambitious project left a mark on the studio: staff exhaustion, reports of grueling work hours, and a culture of constant pressure.

In response to the backlash, Rockstar initiated an internal overhaul, removing executives accused of fostering toxic work environments and promising better conditions for its teams. However, a massive hack in 2022 reignited tensions, leading to unpopular decisions — including mandating employees return to the office five days a week.

Beyond its colossal budget, GTA 6 has already become a global phenomenon. According to Bloomberg, it is expected to be the biggest video game of the decade — and potentially “the most lucrative entertainment product of all time.”

These expectations are not unfounded. GTA V sold 205 million copies and generated around $9 billion in revenue — more than the combined box office of the three highest-grossing films in history. The first trailer for GTA 6, set in a fictional version of Miami and inspired by the story of Bonnie and Clyde, has already surpassed 251 million views on YouTube — fueled by a decade’s worth of rumors and leaks.

But such a staggering investment raises an important question: how much will it cost consumers? Rockstar has yet to announce an official price, but many analysts believe the game could retail for $80 or more. This price jump wouldn’t be unprecedented — Nintendo has already listed new titles at that price point for its upcoming Switch 2, and Microsoft plans to do the same with its next holiday season releases. All signs point to GTA 6 setting records not just in sales, but in how much players will pay to enter the most anticipated gaming universe in the world.
