A shooting at the main campus of Florida State University (FSU) in Tallahassee left at least four people injured on Thursday, according to reports from EFE and local media. The incident took place near the Student Union, a central and busy area of the university, where witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots.
The university issued an emergency alert around 11:00 a.m. local time, activating its institutional protocol. Through its official X account (@FSUAlert) and website, FSU urged students and staff to shelter in place, lock doors, and stay away from windows.
The first alert reported the presence of an armed individual near the Student Union. The university advised the community to remain alert and follow further instructions as the situation unfolded.
In response to the incident, FSU suspended all classes, academic activities, and events scheduled for the day. The university also urged those off-campus to avoid approaching the area until further notice. Local and state security forces are maintaining an active perimeter as the investigation continues.
According to official statements, the emergency initially centered around the Student Union area. Security measures were promptly activated, instructing individuals on campus to lock down and seek safety.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including police, fire departments, and emergency medical services. A heavy presence of emergency vehicles and helicopters was reported in the surrounding streets, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.
In the nearby Bellamy building, police carried out floor-by-floor evacuations as a precaution. Some individuals said they heard sounds resembling gunfire, though that has not been officially confirmed.
The Leon County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) reported deploying a helicopter to assist with aerial surveillance but did not clarify whether its ground units were involved in the operation. The Florida State University Police Department (FSUPD) has not yet responded to media inquiries.
Tallahassee Police, when asked for information, referred all questions to FSUPD, which is responsible for campus security.
Meanwhile, Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare confirmed in a statement that it was receiving and treating individuals transported from the university. The hospital has not released details on the number of patients or the nature of their injuries. In a Facebook post, the medical center said its staff is fully mobilized and coordinating with public safety agencies.
FSU reiterated on its advisory site that all academic and extracurricular activities remain suspended. The university urged the public to avoid entering campus and to rely solely on official channels for updates, discouraging the spread of unverified information.
As of now, no arrests have been reported, and the identity of the alleged shooter remains unknown. The motive behind the shooting has not been disclosed. The investigation is ongoing, and access to the main campus remains restricted while authorities continue their security assessment.
