It’s been over two years since OpenAI launched ChatGPT, ushering in a new era in artificial intelligence. But the company, led by Sam Altman, doesn’t seem ready to stop there. According to The Verge, OpenAI is now setting its sights on social media, aiming to expand its technological reach even further.

Sources familiar with the matter say the company is working on a platform reminiscent of X — formerly known as Twitter — which was acquired by Elon Musk in 2022. While OpenAI has not made any official statements, the reports suggest the project is still in its early stages.

Those who spoke under condition of anonymity claim an internal prototype already exists. It reportedly features a typical social media feed alongside image-generation capabilities powered by ChatGPT.

ChatGPT integration or a standalone app? The leak has sparked several questions: if OpenAI does release a social platform, will it be integrated into the ChatGPT app, or will it be launched as a separate service? While there’s no definitive answer yet, it’s clear that AI tools will be a core part of the user experience.

The move seems to align with recent developments at X, which has deepened its integration with xAI. Users there can interact with Grok, the platform’s in-house chatbot, which not only engages in conversation but also generates images and is available as a standalone app.

The data advantage, The recent merger between X and xAI highlights one of the key reasons behind the shift: access to massive data pools essential for training AI models. By building its own social network, OpenAI could tap into a similar advantage.

A push for profitability, Since disrupting the market with its public release of ChatGPT, OpenAI has shaken up the tech landscape, even prompting Google to fast-track its AI efforts. But the landscape is shifting. Google has narrowed the gap and, in some areas, even pulled ahead.

While OpenAI remains one of the most recognized names in the field, it still faces a pressing challenge: it has yet to become profitable and continues to burn through cash. Launching a social media platform could open up new revenue streams and help the company move toward financial stability.

For now, the project is still exploratory, and there’s no guarantee it will see the light of day. But one thing is certain: OpenAI is determined to keep moving forward in a tech industry that’s evolving at lightning speed.
