Donald Trump’s rival in the Republican Party, Ron DeSantis, announces presidential run

The Florida governor, Ron DeSantis, announced he will be running for President of the United States in the 2024. DeSantis made his presidential run official on Wednesday, May 24 during a Twitter audio event with the platform’s owner, Elon Musk.

In spite of the many tech issues surrounding the event, DeSantis made clear his intentions to run for president and presented all the documents for his candidacy before the Federal Electoral Commission hours before his encounter with Musk. Additionally, it is also clear that Musk is now supportive of the Florida’s governor agenda. This comes as a change after voting for contrarian candidates, Barack Obama and Joe Biden, in previous elections.

DeSantis now assumes a race in which Donald Trump is still the favorite candidate and a commanding force in the Republican Party. However, DeSantis has already achieved a list of accomplishments as a governor which ailing to the priorities and values in the conservative side. This comes in contrast to Trump’s track record as a president, as he had few legislative victories during his period.

Under his governance, DeSantis enacted a number of high-profile conservative laws to enable gun possession, restrict sex and gender identity education in schools, harden electoral regulations, and set limits on abortion laws.

Even though last year’s polls revealed DeSantis was, at some point, ahead of Trump’s chances, they all now indicate the opposite. RealClearPolitics has stated that 50% of the results show Trump still has the upper hand in the Republican voting, whereas DeSantis is behind by two digits.

RealClearPolitics also revealed that, even if DeSantis manages to obtain votes from non-pro-Trump citizens, he would probably lose behind the ex-president. For the time being, DeSantis might be focusing on convincing Trump’s voters that he could be a better version of what the Republican Party needs right now.
