Leonardo Da Vinci‘s painting, Mona Lisa or Gioconda, considered the most famous portrait in the world, was the subject of a new attack on Sunday with the launch of a cream cake that hit the armored glass that protects it, according to testimonies on social networks.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of Sunday, May 29th. Images shared by visitors who were on site at the time show Leonardo da Vinci’s work protection glass stained with cream, while a man, who appears to be a museum guard, cleans it.

Maybe this is just nuts to me?but an man dressed as an old lady jumps out of a wheel chair and attempted to smash the bullet proof glass of the Mona Lisa. Then proceeds to smear cake on the glass, and throws roses everywhere all before being tackled by security. ???? pic.twitter.com/OFXdx9eWcM

The Louvre museum, contacted by AFP, declined on Monday to make any comment. A Twitter user, who claims to have witnessed the incident, explains that the author of the action was a man dressed in a wig, who got up from a wheelchair and hit the glass, before throwing the cake.

“There are people who are destroying the Earth (…) Artists, think of the Earth. That’s why I did it. Think of the planet“, says the man dressed in white with a cap and wig in French.

Other images show the wheelchair behind the security cordon that separates the 16th-century work from visitors. Millions of people flock to the Louvre each year to admire the painting. Since 2005, after receiving attacks in the past, it has been exposed behind armored glass, with a controlled humidity and temperature system.
